Walking Netball is a modified, low-impact version of netball designed for anyone who loves the game but prefers a gentler pace. It is ideal for those wanting to protect their knees, return from injury, improve fitness, or simply enjoy a fun and social night out.

No running.
No pressure.
Just netball – at walking pace.

Location: Wurdi Baierr Stadium 


Day: Thursday Nights


Time: 6.30pm onwards (exact time TBC)
Season Length: 8 Weeks


Who Can Play: Everyone! There are no maximum age restrictions that prohibit players from participating, so it's never too late to start. Please note, participants need to be at least 11 years old to participate.


Cost: The first three weeks are FREE! After that, $25 for the year which includes Victorian Netball Association (VNA) Fees, so you are insured in case of any injuries

THE RULES

Walking Netball is designed to reduce the risk of injury and falls to the players while promoting a safe, non-threatening environment for play, which is achieved through these modifications to the rules:

 

•            You are not allowed to run or jump. Walking is required at all stages.

•            Players get up to 2 steps with the ball!

•            You can hold possession of the ball for 4 seconds

•            Rolling substitutions are allowed throughout the game.

WHAT EQUIPTMENT DO I NEED TO PLAY?

  • Your most appropriate sneakers

  • Workout or sports wear

  • A water bottle or sports drinks

THE RULES 

Do I need medical clearance to be able to participate?

No, there are no requirements outlining that you must receive medical clearance from a doctor to participate in the Walking Netball program. However, if you are unsure of your ability or capacity to participate, it is highly recommended that you consult your doctor for clearance before registration.

 

Core Rule: Walking Only

  • Players must walk at all times.

  • Running or jogging is not permitted.

  • At least one foot must remain in contact with the ground.

  • Repeated running may result in a free pass to the opposing team.

 

No Jumping

  • Jumping to catch or intercept the ball is not allowed.

  • Players must remain grounded when receiving or passing the ball.​

​

Footwork

  • Players may pivot as per standard netball rules.

  • Small adjustment steps are permitted, but movement must remain walking pace.​

​

4-Second Rule

  • Players have 4 seconds to pass the ball once in possession.

  • This encourages safe movement and steady game flow.

  • ​

Distance & Contact

  • Defenders must stand at least 3 feet (0.9m) away from the player with the ball.

  • Physical contact is not permitted.

  • Play should be non-contact and respectful at all times.​

Court Positions

  • Traditional netball positions and court areas are generally maintained.

  • Positional restrictions still apply (e.g. GS and GA in the shooting circle).

  • ​

Game Duration

  • Games are played in shortened quarters or halves (as determined by the competition format).

  • An 8-week season format applies at Surf Coast Netball Association.​

Centre Pass

  • A centre pass is taken after each goal, alternating between teams.

  • The centre must have one foot wholly within the centre circle when taking the pass.​

Out of Court & Obstruction

  • Standard netball rules apply for out-of-court decisions.

  • Obstruction applies if a defender is closer than 3 feet when the player is in possession.
